There are currently two shipwrecks off the coast of Paphos, located near the Tombs of the Kings and Sea Caves areas. Both have become popular tourist attractions and serve as a somber reminder to captains who navigate too close to the shore, where treacherous reefs are common.
The shipwreck near the Tombs of the Kings ran aground during a severe storm in 1998. According to the captain, rudder issues caused the accident, resulting in the MV Demetrios (the second version of this ship) breaching a reef and getting permanently lodged there. Initial attempts were made to refloat the ship, but all were unsuccessful. The vessel is visible from various points along the coastline, as well as from hilltops in Paphos and the nearby villages of Chloraka, Emba, Tala, and Kissonerga. The ship has been photographed countless times and is often featured silhouetted against the backdrop of a beautiful sunset.
The second wreck is the Edro (third version), which also ran aground during a severe storm on December 9th, 2011.
The captain and chief engineer stayed aboard for a few weeks while rescue operations were underway, but all efforts to salvage the ship ultimately failed. The Edro remains lodged on the rocks, just 15 meters from the shore.
A local restaurant has greatly benefited from the shipwreck, drawing daily visitors who come to see the stranded vessel and witness its ongoing struggle against the elements.
