Interestingly, only 20 years ago, Tala was just another typical Cypriot village. However, its excellent location and proximity to the city transformed it into a highly sought-after area. Over the years, the village expanded, with new properties being built, turning the hill into a vibrant residential area.

What makes Tala unique is the lack of large residential complexes. Most of the properties here are private homes.

The village itself is divided into old and new parts. The old part includes the municipal center, a square, and a church. Situated on a hillside, it is known for its picturesque narrow streets that date back to the early 20th century.

Churches and Chapels in Tala

St. Catherine’s Church in Tala
St. Catherine’s Church is a single-aisle structure with a dome. Its external dimensions, excluding the apse, are 18.70 x 8.05 meters.

The current church is the result of expansion and modernization of an older structure, which originally had an arched design and was shorter. During the reconstruction, the apse, part of the northern and southern walls, were demolished, and a new single-aisle nave with a dome was added.

A fragment of the original church, measuring 8.05 x 8.70 meters, has been preserved. The original gates are located in the center of the western wall, while the southern gates of the old church were sealed. Two new entrances were created on the southern wall—one to the west and another to the east of the original entrance.

The church has a small rectangular window on the northern wall and a narrow opening in the semi-circular apse for light. The dome also features four small windows. The dome is relatively large, and the southern and northern arches supporting it are unique. Unlike typical semi-circles or pediments, they end in a straight segment resembling the Greek letter Π (P) when viewed from the southern and northern walls.

The original church was likely decorated with frescoes, as fragments of a large depiction of the Last Judgment can still be seen under the whitewash on the western wall. The church was originally built in the 15th century and gained its current appearance in the mid-16th century.

St. George’s Chapel (Agios Georgios)
The rural chapel of St. George is located in the region of Stefane, which, according to historical sources, was once the old village of Stefanos. The existence of this village is evident on a map of Cyprus from 1573. The ruins of a village church indicate that there was another chapel dedicated to St. Stefanos (Agios Stefanos) in the area.

The church was restored in 1990 by the Holy Monastery of St. Neophytos with donations from both local and foreign residents. According to tradition, baptisms take place in the church every Easter Tuesday, and liturgies are held only on April 23 and November 3 (St. George’s feast days).

Agii Saranta Chapel
The rural chapel of Agii Saranta was in ruins until 1994. It was restored with funds from the Holy See of Paphos and donations from local residents. Baptisms are held here on the feast day of the Forty Martyrs.

St. Marina’s Chapel
This is the newest rural chapel in Tala, built with donations from Zena Kanter Detira, a local resident known for her charitable contributions across Cyprus.

Today, the chapel is being further restored by the villagers. Liturgies are held on July 17, the feast day of St. Marina.
